Bringing Them Home the ALSWA Way
Abstract
This paper examines the activities and strategies of the Aboriginal Legal Service of Western Australia (ALSWA) in relation to its calls for action arising out of Aboriginal childhood removal issues. It focusses on two reports prepared by ALSWA, "Telling Our Story" and "After the Removal" and their treatment by the national inquiry culminating in the report "Bringing Them Home". The author concludes that the push for a national inquiry into the past history of Aboriginal childhood removals and demands for reparations came from a wide cross-section of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal organisations, community leaders, academics, professionals and parliamentarians and that ALSWA was a significant contributor to this movement.
