Abstract

The present Australian Government has refused to materially support reconciliation, or to extend a motion of apology to the Australian "Stolen Generations", despite considerable public attention. The systematic removal of Aboriginal children from their original families and culture has had a pervasive and devastating effect. This article examines the various demands for reparations for the Stolen Generations, with particular attention to acknowledgment and apology, guarantees against repetition, restitution, rehabilitation and monetary compensation. It considers in some detail the recommendations of the National Inquiry and the Commonwealth Government's response.
