The Drug War - Asian Style A Study Of Legal Measures Adopted To Combat Illegal Drug Use In Singapore And China
Abstract
The Drug War describes the procedures by which two nations, vastly differing in political systems, combat a global concern of epidemic proportions, namely drug addiction and trafficking. The People's Republic of China and Singapore are the focus. What is made evident is that despite difference of doctrine, the problems of addiction and trafficking are fought by both in a similar fashion, with the added belief that drug addiction is a criminal rather than health problem. Therefore, both adopt various schemes of forced detention and punishment as hopeful deterrents to these problems. Despite the shortcomings highlighted by these approaches, the article provides a glimpse into the criminal legal system of both nations, indicating that the drug war is far from won.
