The Impact of TRIPs on Agricultural Economies in the Developing World
Abstract
The World Trade Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPs) has brought intellectual property into the forum of global trade. The author argues that by ensuring the development of intellectual property rights regimes in developing countries, TRIPS will decrease the sovereignty of these countries and allow greater domination by the developed nations, both economically and ideologically. In particular, she suggests that enhanced intellectual property rights in agricultural biotechnology will increase the monopoly of transnational agricultural companies and undermine the economic position of small-scale farmers in developing nations.
