Reflections An Address by The Honourable Gough Whitlam AC, QC to the Murdoch Student Law Society
AbstractThis article is a revised version of Gough Whitlam's address to the Murdoch University Student Law Society delivered at Murdoch University in July 1997. The address traces and updates the key issues and themes of his original address to the Murdoch Student Law Society in 1994 entitled "State Rights v World Values". The main issue of analysis is the citizen's right to equal franchise, with particular emphasis in the malapportionment present in Western Australia's State electoral system Mr Whitlam draws upon his wide experience in law, government and politics to illustrate how change can be effected through reference to international law and its tribunals. Examples include the amendment of Tasmania's laws against homosexuality and laws against genocide. The speech includes a number of anecdotal references about Mr Whitlam's and others' roles in the issues discussed. |
