From Censorship to Classification
Abstract
The article reproduces an address given by the Commonwealth Attorney-General at Murdoch University, Western Australia, on Friday 31 October 1997. In it he details the legislative and administrative framework underpinning censorship laws throughout Australia emphasising the collaborative way the Commonwealth and States have chosen to address issues of censorship and classification. The historical background to its development is also touched on. The article also spells out in detail the principles which underlie the approach to censorship and form the basis of classification guidelines. Publications, film, computer games, and television and on-line services are all canvassed in the article.
