Copyright Reform - The Government's Agenda: A Speech to the Eighth Biennial Copyright Law and Practice Symposium, 7 November 1997
AbstractThis is the text of a public address on aspects of the Commonwealth (Australian national) government's policies for copyright law reform. One area addressed is policies to do with Internet based interactive data facilities as those policies are developing from the discussion paper "Copright Reform and the Digital Agenda" and the responses to it. (See also the accompanying commentary by Michael Pendleton, "Reforming Copyright for the Digital Age - Everyone's Horse on the Wrong Course".) Another area addressed is the recent decision of as to parallel importation of CDs and reforms of the anti-piracy measures in the federal Copyright Act. A third area addressed is Australia's role in assisting other countries in its region to bring their laws into line with the international Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights or "TRIPs". Finally, the release of discussion papers is foreshadowed, in the areas of software protection are performers' rights, and the conclusion of consultations on Australia's accession to the two new WIPO copyright treaties is referred to. |
