Abstract

The review relates to a book written by Ellen Goodman and titled "The Origin of Western Legal Tradition: From Thales to the Tudors". It was published in 1995 by The Federation Press in Sydney. Zariski describes Goodman's approach to history as iconic, and contrasts it with Michel Foucault's archaeologic approach and Max Weber's analytic method. Zariski's predilection is towards the archaeologic approach and he therefore comes to the conclusion that Goodman's Book is best read with an understanding of the competing approaches to history.
