A leading global computer scientist will explore the future of immersive experiences, in which the boundaries between the virtual and physical worlds start to blur, at a major conference in Perth next week.

Professor Pan Hui, Chair Professor of Computational Media and Arts, and Director of the Centre for Metaverse and Computational Creativity at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), and Chair Professor of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, is one of two keynote speakers at the 25th IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks – known as WoWMom - from 4-7 June.

The conference is presented and hosted by Murdoch University and the University of NSW, bringing together researchers and practitioners interested in wireless, mobile and multimedia pervasive communications.

Murdoch University Associate Professor Polychronis Koutsakis said the conference program would also focus on developments in wireless networking technologies, and their key role in future Internet scenarios.

We, at the School of IT, are very excited to be hosting this premier international event at Murdoch University,” he said.

“It is only fitting that a conference exploring the frontiers of technology will be hosted in Boola Katitjin, one of Australia’s most technologically advanced buildings in tertiary education and winner of the 2023 World Architecture Festival Higher Education and Research Building.

“I am very much looking forward to the presentations from all speakers, as well as the panel discussion on navigating the future of cyber security by combatting AI-powered attacks for securing critical infrastructure”.

In his keynote address, Professor Hui will introduce delegates to the concept of “metaformation” – the process of transforming physical spaces into hybrid physical-digital Metaverses, allowing people to interact seamlessly with virtual objects in their surroundings thanks to advanced holographic technology and head-mounted displays.

In the Metaverse, individual users will own their respective avatars, experiencing an alternate life,” Professor Hui said. “To think of the experiential leap we’re about to make – on the Internet, nobody knows you’re a dog, in the Metaverse, anyone can be a cat!”

Professor Hui said the potential for the Metaverse to transform the way people experience the world was enormous. His keynote will also touch on the future of university teaching, for example, with campuses and classrooms offering Metaverse learning experiences.

Professor Albert Zomaya, from the School of Computer Science at the University of Sydney will deliver another keynote address on Edge Intelligence, which involves the integration of AI algorithms and data processing at the edge of the network.

Professor Koutsakis said Murdoch University was delighted to host WoWMom, which is an important gathering of researchers and practitioners from around the world, working on the latest advances in mobile networking and applications.
