Murdoch women in STEMM join historic expedition to Antarctica

Two prominent Murdoch University academics have departed Ushuaia, Argentina – on the southern-most tip of South America – as part of the Homeward Bound leadership expedition to Antarctica.
Professor of Immunology Cassandra Berry and Pro Vice Chancellor Professor Jennifer Verduin – have joined more than 120 women and non-binary leaders with backgrounds in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine) for the historic expedition, aimed to inspire collective leadership action on sustainability issues.
Professors Berry and Verduin departed Ushuaia on 28 January on board the MS Island Sky for a 15-night voyage to Antarctica. During the voyage they will learn about visibility, leadership, wellbeing, strategy and science.
I began this journey as one of the few women in my field, particularly during oceanographic research expeditions, and it’s deeply rewarding to see how far we’ve come. Together, we’re building a future where diversity fuels discovery and no one stands alone.
“I am passionate about inspiring the next generation of marine scientists by teaching about the ocean's wonders and fostering leadership skills. My goal is to empower students to pursue transformative experiences that ignite their passion for the ocean and prepare them to become the leaders and scientists our world needs.”
Professor Berry said it felt surreal to finally embark on the voyage after her selection was delayed by the COVID pandemic. As a leading Immunologist, her expertise was often called on during the pandemic to provide scientifically based information about COVID and vaccinations to a concerned public.
I hope to learn, reflect, and be inspired for the future, immersed in the beauty of the radiant blue ice and the biodiversity of the mythical white continent Terra Incognita. I can’t wait to share my experience of this epic voyage with others, including my students.
