Student Success at ICMJ 2024

Murdoch Team and their awards

Last week, nine students studying Agriculture Science at Murdoch University embarked on an extensive red meat industry tour across NSW, highlighted by their participation in the Intercollegiate Meat Judging (ICMJ) Conference and Competition.

This opportunity allowed them to expand their horizons and forge connections with university peers from across Australia, the United States and Japan, as well as network with leaders in the field. The tour ran from the 1st-9th of July, where the competition and conference was held over four consecutive days. The conference included presentations from a range of guest speakers, industry relevant workshops and a careers event to further develop students knowledge, experience, and networking skills.

We congratulate all students on their achievements at this year's competition. Special recognition goes to Kristy Shadbolt for securing first place in pork judging and fifth place overall, and to Brooklyn Seth for fifth place in pork judging. Our team also achieved runner-up status for overall placings behind the USA team. Additionally, Kristen Batten, William Lethlean, and Kristy made it into the top 16, with Kristen and Kristy advancing to the top 10. They will now compete for spots on the Australian National Meat Judging Team in Brisbane this September, aiming for next year's competition in the USA. Best of luck to Kristen and Kristy! Taite O'Neill was chosen as the Coach's Pick for her proactive approach and dedication to the livestock industry, joining Kristen and Kristy on the Brisbane industry tour.

We extend our thanks to our sponsors—Harvey Beef, The Royal Agricultural Society of WA, Hillcroft Farms, Stirling Ranges Beef, and Boree Park Stud—for their invaluable support, making it possible for our students to participate in ICMJ. Their investment in the future of Australia's red meat industries is greatly appreciated. Our students have returned enriched with knowledge and a strong motivation to enter the industry upon completing their studies.

Lastly, we express our gratitude to the ICMJ committee and sponsors for organizing an exceptional week filled with industry-relevant activities. This event provides an invaluable glimpse into the red meat industry, and opens doors to for future leaders of the industry.
