UltraWhite Sheep Take Centre Stage at Murdoch University Open Day 2025

Article by Emily Adams (Bachelor of Agricultural Science)
Murdoch University, renowned for its innovative approach to education and research, recently opened its doors to the public during the 2025 Open Day. Among the various demonstrations and interactive sessions, one particular highlight that captured the attention of animal lovers and agricultural science enthusiasts alike was the showcase of UltraWhite Sheep.
What is an UltraWhite?
UltraWhite sheep are a unique composite shedding breed developed by Hillcroft Farms, combining the hardiness of the Dorper sheep with the growth, muscling, and maternal strengths of the Poll Dorset.
This breed was created with the goal of producing a low-maintenance sheep that thrives in diverse conditions, offering excellent growth rates and meat yields. UltraWhite sheep are highly valued for their adaptability, superior meat quality, and efficient production, making them an sought after choice for both commercial lamb production and breeding.
With a stabilized flock of 10,000 UltraWhite ewes, Hillcroft Farms has established the breed as a cornerstone of the modern Australian sheep industry.
UltraWhite Rams on Display
Three UltraWhite rams were showcased at the Murdoch University Open Day, offering attendees the opportunity to get up close with a breed developed in Western Australia. The rams demonstrated the breed’s characteristics including rapid growth rates, muscling and 'easy care' traits that make the sheep resistant to diseases such as 'fly strike'.
The display caught the attention of visitors from all over campus. The display was not only a chance to admire the animals’ physical qualities, but also an opportunity for attendees to learn about sheep farming and up-and-coming sheep breeds in the Australian agriculture industry.
The quiet temperament and friendly nature of the rams gave visitors a chance to feel the different coat type and amount of muscle that these sheep have in comparison to other more common breeds such as the Merino.
Attendees (and also staff) loved taking pictures of the rams which mainly consisted of noses because the rams were too curious to allow for a whole body shot.
The Bradford Family have been highly valued partners of Murdoch University for over 20 years, having hosted multiple major research projects at Hillcroft Farms, as well as hosting students for work experience and workshops. The team at Murdoch University thank the Dawson, Greta and the team at Hillcroft Farms for their ongoing support and exceptional advocacy for agricultural science education and research.
