Chiropractic students head north on the annual rural and remote placements.

Fifth year chiropractic students are again heading to remote areas in regional and remote regions of Western Australia in 2025 to provide free chiropractic treatment to people who would not normally have access.

This year students will be visiting Broome, Derby and Geraldton to provide free treatment under the watchful supervision of experienced clinicians. Currently there are 5 students in Broome, (Izak Geddes, Lachlan Lawrence, Junho Cho, Tully Lane and Patrick Holmes) until the 4th of April providing free care at Broome Circle and the Community Room in the Derby Recreation Centre.  With more students anticipated to head North later in the year.

Placement coordinator Dr Lyndon Amorin-Woods said this was the 20th year in a row that Murdoch students had travelled north to provide treatment.

“In regional and remote communities people have very limited access to chiropractic services if at all. It’s also a great opportunity for our students to get experience helping people with different sorts of cases. For many this might the first time they provide chiropractic care to Indigenous First Nations people. Before they go up north they participate in cultural awareness training and learn a yarning style of talking to people.  Many of the students report the experience as ‘life-changing’.”

The visits to the Kimberley and Mid-West are coordinated and facilitated by the Majarlin Kimberley Centre for Remote Health in Broome and the WA Centre for Rural Health (WACRH) in Geraldton. The trips are also generously supported by the Australian Chiropractors Association, Broome Circle and the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley.

All participating students have already started their 5th year practicum within the University’s Chiropractic Clinic, offering care to the public, at the South Street campus.

People in the Kimberley who wish to attend the free clinics should call 0429 044 229 to contact the team.
