High School students visit the School of Allied Health

The School of Allied Health regularly host high school visits, last month John Curtin College of the Arts visited to learn how a change in external temperature can impact exercise performance.
A Year 12 ATAR Physical Education Studies class from John Curtin College of the Arts recently completed a Heat Laboratory in our Exercise Physiology teaching space. The two-hour Heat Laboratory involved Year 12 students working in groups of 3-4 to collect baseline data such as body mass, height, core body temperature, atmospheric temperature and humidity, thirst, comfort and perceived levels of exertion. Students then participated in cycling activities in either our heat chamber or in cooler laboratory conditions. Throughout the cycling component non-cycling participants collected additional data to determine the impact of being physically active in heat conditions compared to cool environmental conditions.
Whilst John Curtin students were on campus, they took a tour of our Exercise and Sport Science facilities as well as School of Education teaching facilities where staff shared information about Murdoch courses available to school leavers. John Curtin staff and students enjoyed the opportunity to experience exercise sport science practices in action as well as the being able to familiarise themselves with facilities, resources, and opportunities available to Murdoch University students.
The School of Allied Health regularly provide educational and dynamic workshops. We offer workshops to students who are interested in learning more about the human body and applying science into physical movement. For teachers interested in learning more about what outreach opportunities are available please contact our Allied Health STEM outreach officer Emma McClelland on emma.mcclelland@murdoch.edu.au
