Introducing Media and Communication at Murdoch University

Media and communication majors

Welcome to the School of Media and Communication. We are a collective of scholars and highly skilled industry specialists dedicated to support and develop the next generation of creative media and communication professionals.

Through fostering the nexus of research, teaching and learning, we are dedicated to delivering quality education and real world experiences.

Through a mix of theory, design, and creativity, our programs are designed for students to become storytellers and diverse thinkers in a modern world.

We provide a nurturing environment, a safe space for students to flourish and express themselves creatively, as practitioners and researchers.

We encourage students to be themselves, whether that be through words, sound, or screen.

Our leadership team consists of highly skilled creative academics who share diverse teaching and research interests including the Dean of Media and Communication, Associate Professor Renae Desai; Associate Dean of Engagement, Dr Mark Cypher; Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching, Dr Leo Murray; Deputy Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching, John Basset; Associate Dean of Inclusion and Equity, Narelle Hopkin and Associate Dean of Research, Dr Lauren O'Mahony.

"As we enter 2023, a key focus for us is reinitialising post COVID learning and teaching. We are pursuing multiple opportunities that are centred around real world projects, domestically and internationally.

Giving students experiences outside of the classroom is super important as it broadens the curriculum, and it offers diversity within their university experience”, said Associate Professor Desai.

Through programs that engage external stakeholders, and our own MESH consultancy that replicated the agency experience, students are able to work with real clients on real projects form their very first teaching period.

These programs are dedicated to teaching students how to creatively solve problems for clients, bridging the gap for students to become professionals.

Through working in cross disciplinary teams, students are able to become critical thinkers that speak to societal concerns, developing strong expertise and skill sets.
