Master of Food Science Students Gain Practical Experience at SIFT Processing Factory

FSN students with apples at SIFT

A Day of Hands-On Learning in a State-of-the-Art Facility

This week, our Master of Food Science students rolled up their sleeves and dived into the world of food manufacturing by preparing ready-to-use apple pie filling. This practical session was part of their coursework for FSN606 Food Product Design and Development with Andrew Tilley. The session took place in our sparkling, clean, and newly established Sustainable Innovative Food Technology (SIFT) facility.

The SIFT facility, located at the Food Innovation Precinct of Western Australia (FIPWA), provides students with invaluable hands-on production experience using commercial equipment. This unique setup is right beside the Murdoch Food Centre, a site designed specifically for Food Science research and education.

FIPWA is not just any facility; it is a state-of-the-art hub that fosters industry innovation. Its mission is to drive business growth, develop new products and exports, and transform Western Australia’s food and beverage manufacturing industry. The high-tech environment at SIFT allows students to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, preparing them for successful careers in the food industry.

The hands-on experience gained at the SIFT facility not only enhances the students' learning but also boosts their confidence to work in real-world processing environments. By engaging in such practical sessions, students develop a thorough understanding of the production processes, quality control, and innovative techniques used in the food industry today.

Our postgraduate programs are designed to equip students with both the theoretical foundations and practical skills needed in the food science field. The programs offered include:

  • Graduate Certificate in Food Science
  • Graduate Diploma in Food Science
  • Master of Food Science (Industry Practice)
  • Master of Food Science (Industry Practice and Innovation)

These programs are tailored to meet the needs of the industry and to ensure that our graduates are well-prepared to contribute to and lead in the ever-evolving field of food science.
