Striving for a brighter future
Murdoch University aims to become the university of first choice for First Nations peoples and an exemplar in embracing, promoting and benefitting from Indigenous Knowledges and cultural inclusivity.
Our drive towards that future – one that that is inclusive, respectful, and prosperous for First Nations communities – is anchored in four pivotal commitments:
We commit to truth-telling by educating our staff, students and communities about past injustices committed against Aboriginal peoples. We believe truth-telling is crucial to the ongoing process of healing and reconciliation.
Our communities need greater numbers of Indigenous experts and specialists across a range of disciplines to drive forward agendas to determine our own futures. We commit to growing the number of Indigenous graduates and First Nations staff in our community.
We commit to integrating traditional and contemporary Indigenous Knowledges into our curriculum, research and leadership initiatives, recognising them as essential and valuable forms of wisdom. This enhances our educational landscape, fostering a diverse and inclusive environment that respects and uplifts Indigenous perspectives.
We celebrate the strengths and achievements of Indigenous communities, moving beyond deficit narratives to highlight resilience and success. We showcase Indigenous excellence through various programs and initiatives, reinforcing a positive, strengths-based perspective across academic and cultural engagements.
Our First Nations strategy

Our values
We acknowledge and honour the rich cultural heritage and knowledge systems of First Nations peoples, recognising their invaluable contributions to a collective understanding of the world.
We foster meaningful partnerships with First Nations communities built on trust, reciprocity, and mutual benefit. These partnerships will forge genuine collaboration, where knowledge exchange, cultural understanding, and shared goals drive the relationship.
We empower First Nations students, staff, and communities by offering culturally sensitive and relevant education and support programs. These initiatives not only provide essential resources and guidance but also affirm the unique identities and aspirations of Indigenous individuals.
We pursue research that addresses the priorities and aspirations of First Nations peoples and contributes to their wellbeing and self-determination. We are dedicated to providing pathways that increase Indigenous research outcomes.
